In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Matthew chapters 14 through 16. Jesus' compassion and power are on full display—He feeds a hungry crowd and walks on water toward His terrified disciples. Peter's attempt to walk out to Him shows both faith and doubt, sinking the moment fear takes over. Jesus then redefines uncleanness as a matter of the heart and extends healing to a Canaanite woman's daughter, showing His kingdom reaches beyond ethnic boundaries. The reading turns on Peter's confession that Jesus is the Messiah—and on what Jesus says must happen next. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for the Gospel's hinge.
Episode Overview
Today we read Matthew chapters 14 through 16. It opens with John the Baptist's execution at a birthday party, and Jesus withdrawing to a solitary place to grieve—except the crowds follow Him, and He has compassion on them and heals their sick. Then He feeds more than five thousand from five loaves and two fish, with twelve baskets left over.
That night He comes to the disciples walking on the water, and they think He is a ghost. Peter asks to come to Him, and does—actually walks—until he sees the wind. The detail is precise: he does not sink because the water changed, but because his attention did.
Chapter 15 confronts the Pharisees over handwashing traditions, and Jesus relocates defilement entirely: what goes into the mouth does not defile a person, but what comes out of it does, because that comes from the heart. Then a Canaanite woman presses Him about her demon-possessed daughter through an exchange that sounds harsh until her persistence draws out the commendation—woman, you have great faith.
Chapter 16 is the hinge of the Gospel. Who do people say the Son of Man is? Then: who do you say I am? Peter answers, you are the Messiah, the Son of the living God, and Jesus says flesh and blood did not reveal that. But immediately He begins explaining that He must go to Jerusalem, suffer, be killed, and be raised. Peter rebukes Him for it, and gets the sharpest rebuke in return. The confession and the cross arrive together.
