In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Mark chapters 2 through 5. Jesus repeatedly clashes with the religious authorities—accused of blasphemy for forgiving a paralyzed man's sins, criticized for eating with tax collectors, and challenged over the Sabbath. Through each conflict He demonstrates real authority even as opposition builds. He teaches in parables about the kingdom, then calms a storm, leaving His disciples amazed. Mark 5 gathers three more miracles: a demon-possessed man freed, a dying girl raised, and a woman healed after years of bleeding. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for compassion that reaches the excluded.
Episode Overview
Today we read Mark chapters 2 through 5. It opens with four friends who cannot get through the crowd, so they dig through the roof and lower their paralyzed friend down. Jesus sees their faith—theirs, not only his—and says son, your sins are forgiven, which is not what anyone came for and is exactly what provokes the charge of blasphemy.
The conflicts stack up from there: eating with tax collectors, not fasting, picking grain on the Sabbath, healing a shriveled hand on the Sabbath while they watch to see if He will. Mark notes Jesus looking around at them in anger, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts. By verse six of chapter 3 they are already plotting to kill Him.
Chapter 4 gives the sower, the growing seed that sprouts whether the farmer understands it or not, and the mustard seed. Then the storm, and the question that lands hardest: why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?
Chapter 5 is three restorations. A man among the tombs, so violent no chain could hold him, left sitting dressed and in his right mind. Then, on the way to heal Jairus' daughter, a woman who had bled for twelve years touches Jesus' cloak and is healed—and He stops the whole procession to find her, not to scold but to call her daughter and send her in peace. Then Jairus' daughter, already dead, told simply to get up. The demonized, the unclean, the dead. No one is out of reach.
