Who Is My Neighbor? Seventy Two Sent Out and a Samaritan Who Stopped | Luke 9–11

Episode Summary

In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Luke chapters 9 through 11. Jesus sends the twelve out to preach and heal, depending on the hospitality of those they meet. The Transfiguration reveals His glory, but soon after the disciples fail to heal a boy and argue over who is greatest, and Jesus places a child before them as the picture of true greatness. He then sends seventy-two more ahead of Him, and they return rejoicing. When a lawyer asks about the greatest commandment, Jesus answers with the parable of the good Samaritan. Episode Notes

Episode Overview

Today we read Luke chapters 9 through 11. The twelve go out with nothing—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money—dependent on whatever hospitality they find. Then the feeding of the five thousand, Peter's confession, the first passion prediction, and the Transfiguration, where Moses and Elijah speak with Jesus about His departure, which He was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.

Luke then marks a turn: as the time approached, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. Everything from here has a destination.

Seventy-two are sent ahead in pairs, told the harvest is plentiful but the workers few, and warned they go as lambs among wolves. They return thrilled that even the demons submit, and Jesus redirects their joy—do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but that your names are written in heaven.

Then the lawyer's question, and Jesus turns it back: what is written in the Law? The man answers correctly—love God, love your neighbor—and then, wanting to justify himself, asks who counts as a neighbor. The story that follows is deliberately uncomfortable for its original audience. A priest passes by. A Levite passes by. The one who stops is a Samaritan, a member of a despised group, and he spends his own money on a stranger's recovery. Jesus does not answer the question asked. He changes it: which of these was a neighbor to the man? Go and do likewise.

Chapter 11 gives the Lord's Prayer in Luke's form, the friend at midnight, and the promise that the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask.
