What does faithfulness look like after the worst has already happened? Today we read Jeremiah chapters 39 through 41. Jerusalem finally falls. The walls are breached, the palace and houses are burned, Zedekiah is captured while fleeing, and many of the people are marched off to Babylon. Jeremiah, still confined in the courtyard of the guard, is released and treated with unexpected respect once the Babylonians realize his words had proven true. Given his choice of going to Babylon or staying, he chooses to remain with the poor who were left behind in the land.
What follows is chaos rather than peace. Gedaliah, the newly appointed governor, ignores a warning and is assassinated, and the surviving remnant is left frightened and unsure whether to flee to Egypt. Jeremiah offers no new pronouncements in these chapters, just a steady, faithful presence among people whose world has collapsed. The question hanging over them is the same one running through the whole book: will they trust God, or turn to another power for safety?
