What does it mean to ask God for direction you have already decided to ignore? Today we read Jeremiah chapters 42 through 44. The remnant left in Judah comes to Jeremiah and promises, with apparent sincerity, to obey whatever God says. Ten days later the answer comes and it is clear: stay in the land, do not fear the king of Babylon, and God will build you up rather than tear you down. Instead they accuse Jeremiah of lying, and drag him and Baruch along as they flee to Egypt for safety, repeating the same old pattern of hearing God's word and setting it aside.
In Egypt, Jeremiah confronts them one final time. The very disaster they ran from will follow them there, he warns, and he pleads with them to abandon their offerings to the Queen of Heaven. They refuse outright, insisting their old ways served them well and their troubles began when they stopped. Jeremiah's persistence in speaking truth, even at the end and even unheeded, becomes itself a lasting witness to God's faithfulness.
