Episode Overview
Today we read Daniel chapters 5 through 8. Belshazzar throws a feast and drinks from vessels looted from the temple in Jerusalem—a deliberate act of contempt. A hand appears and writes four words on the plaster, and none of his advisors can read them. Daniel does: your days are numbered, you have been weighed and found wanting, your kingdom is divided. That night Babylon falls. The empire that seemed permanent lasted exactly as long as the sentence took to be carried out.
Under the new regime Daniel's rivals cannot find anything to charge him with, so they engineer a law against praying to anyone but the king. Daniel goes home, opens his windows toward Jerusalem, and prays as he always has. The lions' den follows, and so does the morning when he walks out unharmed.
The last chapters shift into vision. Four beasts rise from a churning sea, each stranger than the last, and a small horn speaks arrogant words. Then thrones are set in place, the Ancient of Days takes His seat, and one like a son of man is given everlasting dominion. Whatever chaos unfolds on earth, these visions insist the future belongs to God, not to empires that look unstoppable in the moment.
