Episode Overview
Today we read Ezekiel chapters 27 through 30. Chapter 27 is an extraordinary piece of writing—a funeral song for Tyre imagined as a ship, built from the finest materials the ancient world could supply, crewed by skilled sailors, loaded with the goods of dozens of trading partners who are each named in turn. The catalog is admiring, almost affectionate. And then the east wind breaks her in the heart of the seas, and everything sinks together.
Chapter 28 turns to the king of Tyre, whose wealth and skill have convinced him he is a god. The language reaches back to Eden and a guardian cherub cast down for pride, and many readers have heard in it an echo of a heavenly being's original rebellion. Whatever else it describes, it diagnoses the same disease: gifts mistaken for self-sufficiency.
Then Egypt. Pharaoh is pictured as a great sea monster lounging in his own Nile, saying the river is mine, I made it for myself. Egypt will be scattered and broken, and later restored only as a lowly kingdom, never again a power for others to lean on—which strips the exiles of their last political hope. Only God turns out to be dependable.
