In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Luke chapters 16 through 18. The reading centers on money, humility, and persistent faith. The shrewd manager and the story of the rich man and Lazarus both warn that how we use wealth and treat the needy carries eternal consequences—and that refusing to listen to Moses and the Prophets means no miracle will convince us either. Jesus teaches on forgiving repeatedly and on faith the size of a mustard seed. The persistent widow and the humble tax collector then model the kind of prayer God honors. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for honest humility.
Episode Overview
Today we read Luke chapters 16 through 18. The shrewd manager is one of Jesus' strangest parables—a man about to be fired who slashes his master's debts to make friends for himself, and is commended for his shrewdness, not his ethics. The point lands in the application: use worldly wealth to gain friends, because you cannot serve both God and money.
Then the rich man and Lazarus. A man in purple and fine linen feasting daily, and a sick beggar at his gate covered in sores. Notice that the rich man knows Lazarus by name from across the chasm—he had seen him every day and walked past. The request for someone to warn his brothers gets the answer that closes the story: if they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.
Chapter 17 covers forgiving a brother seven times in one day, mustard-seed faith, and the ten lepers, where only one returns to give thanks and he is a Samaritan.
Chapter 18 gives two prayer parables back to back. A widow who wears down an unjust judge by sheer persistence—if even he responds, how much more will God. And a Pharisee who thanks God he is not like other people, beside a tax collector who will not look up and simply says God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Jesus says the second man went home justified. Then children welcomed as the picture of receiving the kingdom, and a wealthy ruler told to sell everything, who goes away sad.
