Episode Overview
Today we finish Ezekiel with chapters 47 and 48. The vision ends with water. A river flows out from under the threshold of the temple, and Ezekiel's guide leads him into it in stages—measuring a thousand cubits and wading in ankle deep, another thousand and it is knee deep, another and it is at the waist, and then a river deep enough to swim in and impossible to cross. The current does not thin out as it travels. It deepens.
Where it goes, life follows. It runs down into the Arabah and into the Dead Sea—the saltiest, most lifeless water in the region—and the water becomes fresh. Fish of every kind fill it. Fruit trees grow along both banks, bearing every month, their leaves for healing. The picture is simple and sweeping at once: wherever God's presence flows, death gives way to life and barrenness to abundance.
The final chapter divides the land among the tribes, with sacred space and the sanctuary at the center of the arrangement, and then gives the city its name: the Lord is there. A book that opened with God's glory abandoning a corrupted temple closes with His presence dwelling permanently among His people. The whole arc of Ezekiel is in that last line.
