He teaches forgiveness as central to community life, then addresses marriage, wealth, and status—inverting worldly values at every turn. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for a kingdom upside down.
Episode Overview
Today we read Matthew chapters 17 through 20. On a high mountain Jesus is transfigured—His face shining like the sun, Moses and Elijah beside Him, a bright cloud and a voice repeating what was said at the baptism. Peter wants to build shelters and stay. They come down instead, into a situation the other disciples could not handle.
Chapter 18 answers a question the disciples raise about who is greatest by putting a child in front of them. Not because children are innocent, but because they are dependent and have no status to leverage. Then the lost sheep: a shepherd leaves ninety-nine to find one, because the Father is not willing that any of these little ones should perish. Then Peter asks how many times he should forgive—seven? Jesus says seventy-seven, and tells the story of a servant forgiven an unpayable debt who then throttles a colleague over a trivial one.
Chapters 19 and 20 press on marriage, wealth, and status. Jesus affirms marriage as a covenant God joins. A rich young man asks what he must do, keeps every commandment, and leaves grieving when told to sell what he has—the one thing he could not release. Then the vineyard workers, where everyone hired at any hour receives the same wage, and the early workers complain about the generosity. The refrain running through all of it: the last will be first, and whoever wants to be great must serve.
