Episode Overview
Today we read Ezekiel chapters 40 through 43, and the tone of the book changes completely. Twenty-five years into exile, Ezekiel is taken in visions to a high mountain and shown a temple, where a man whose appearance is like bronze measures everything—gate thresholds, alcoves, jambs, porticos, courts, chambers—cubit by cubit. Modern readers often find these chapters slow. For exiles who had watched their temple burn, a blueprint recited in that much detail was an argument: this is real, this is planned, this is coming.
The precision is also theological. Order, proportion, and boundary say something about the God being approached. Worship is not casual, and the care taken in the measurements reflects the care owed to God Himself.
Then chapter 43 delivers what everything has been building toward. The glory of the God of Israel comes from the east, His voice like the roar of rushing waters, the land radiant with His glory—and the glory enters the temple by the east gate and fills the house. Ezekiel recognizes it: this is the same glory he watched leave. The departure recorded in chapter 10 is answered here. Separation from God, for these exiles, is not the permanent state of things.
