Episode Overview
Today we open the book of Daniel with chapters 1 through 4. Daniel and his friends are teenagers carried off to Babylon and enrolled in a program designed to remake them—new language, new learning, new names. Their resistance is quiet and specific: they ask for vegetables and water instead of the king's rich food, and request a ten-day trial to prove it. Notice what they do not do. They do not stage a protest or refuse the training. They pick the hill worth dying on and hold it politely.
The rest of these chapters is about who actually runs history. Nebuchadnezzar dreams of a towering statue made of descending metals—kingdom after kingdom—struck down by a stone cut without human hands, becoming a mountain that fills the earth. Then three men refuse to bow to a golden image and tell the king plainly that God can rescue them, but even if He does not, they still will not bow. They walk out of the furnace unburned, with a fourth figure seen beside them. Finally the king himself is humbled like a felled tree, living as an animal until he acknowledges what Daniel had already told him: every throne stands under God's authority.
