Word for Word: The Bible

Take Up Your Cross: A Hometown's Rejection and Bread for Five Thousand | Mark 6–8

Episode Summary

In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Mark chapters 6 through 8. Jesus is rejected in His hometown, where people who watched Him grow up cannot accept His authority, even as He sends His disciples out in pairs. John the Baptist's execution foreshadows Jesus' own death. He feeds five thousand from a few loaves, yet the disciples still fail to understand. That pattern breaks at a pivotal moment: Peter confesses Him as the Messiah—then rebukes Him for saying the Messiah must suffer and die. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for a path to glory that runs through suffering.

Episode Notes

Episode Overview

Today we read Mark chapters 6 through 8. Jesus returns to Nazareth and the reaction is telling: isn't this the carpenter? Aren't his sisters here with us? Familiarity turns out to be its own kind of blindness, and Mark says He could not do any miracles there except heal a few sick people, and He was amazed at their lack of faith.

He sends the twelve out two by two with nothing but a staff. Meanwhile Mark tells the story of John the Baptist's execution—a rash oath at a birthday party, a head on a platter—which functions as a warning about what happens to prophets who confront power.

Then the feeding of five thousand, with Jesus looking at the crowd as sheep without a shepherd. Then walking on water. Then a second feeding, of four thousand. And after all of it, the disciples worry in the boat because they forgot to bring bread, and Jesus asks whether their hearts are hardened: do you have eyes but fail to see? Do you not remember?

Chapter 8 is the turning point of Mark's Gospel. Just after a blind man is healed in two stages—seeing people like trees walking, then clearly—Jesus asks who the disciples say He is. Peter answers, you are the Messiah. And then Jesus explains plainly that the Son of Man must suffer, be rejected, be killed, and rise. Peter takes Him aside to rebuke Him, and is rebuked in return. Then: whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross.
