In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we finish Mark and begin Luke. Mark closes with Jesus crying out in the words of Psalm 22 before He dies, a Roman centurion confessing that surely this was the Son of God, and the women finding His tomb empty on the third day. Luke then goes back to before the beginning: Gabriel tells an aging priest his wife will bear a son, and tells a young woman named Mary she will bear a son named Jesus. Her response is simple acceptance. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for good news announced to shepherds.
Episode Overview
Today we finish Mark and begin Luke. Mark's crucifixion account is spare and devastating: mockery, darkness over the land, and Jesus crying out my God, my God, why have you forsaken me—the opening line of Psalm 22, a psalm that ends in vindication. The curtain tears. And the first human being in Mark's Gospel to correctly identify Jesus as the Son of God is the Roman centurion who watched Him die. Then the women come to the tomb worrying about who will roll the stone away, and find it already moved.
Luke begins completely differently, with a formal dedication to Theophilus and a stated method—carefully investigated, orderly account, from eyewitnesses. Luke is writing history and says so.
Then Gabriel, twice. First to Zechariah, an old priest serving in the temple, told his barren wife Elizabeth will bear a son named John. He asks how he can be sure and is struck silent until the birth. Then to Mary, a young woman in Nazareth, told she will conceive by the Holy Spirit. She asks a similar question and receives an answer instead of a rebuke, then says I am the Lord's servant, may your word to me be fulfilled.
Luke's telling is full of songs—Mary's Magnificat about the humble lifted and the powerful brought down, Zechariah's prophecy, the angels to the shepherds, and old Simeon in the temple holding the baby, ready to die in peace, warning Mary that a sword will pierce her own soul too.
