In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Zechariah chapters 6 through 8. The visions continue with four chariots patrolling the earth, showing God actively at work throughout creation. Joshua is then crowned as both king and priest, a pairing that points ahead to the coming Messiah. When the people raise a question about whether to keep fasting, God redirects them entirely—He cares far more about justice, mercy, and compassion than ritual observance. The reading closes with Jerusalem restored as a city of truth, its streets filled with children at play. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for the high point of Zechariah's message.
Episode Overview
Today we read Zechariah chapters 6 through 8. Four chariots come out from between two bronze mountains, patrolling north, south, and across the earth—a picture of God's activity running everywhere at once, not confined to Jerusalem.
Then a crown is made and placed on Joshua's head. This is unusual enough to be the point: Joshua is a priest, and crowns belong to kings. Israel kept those offices strictly separate. Here they are combined in one man called the Branch, who will build the temple and sit and rule on his throne, and there will be harmony between the two. The arrangement points beyond Joshua to someone still coming.
Chapter 7 begins with a practical question. The people have been fasting in the fifth month for seventy years to mourn the temple's destruction, and now that it is being rebuilt, should they keep doing it? God's answer does not address fasting at all. When you fasted, was it really for me? And then the redirect: administer true justice, show mercy and compassion, do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the foreigner, or the poor. That is what the earlier prophets said, and not listening is what got them here.
Chapter 8 is the emotional peak. Old men and women will again sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each with a cane in hand from age, and the streets will be filled with boys and girls playing. Ordinary life, restored. God will be their God in truth and faithfulness.
