In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Matthew chapters 21 through 23. Jesus enters Jerusalem to shouts of praise, riding a donkey rather than a war horse—a king unlike what the crowds expect. He clears the temple of its corrupt commercialism and curses a fruitless fig tree, foreshadowing judgment on a nation bearing no spiritual fruit. He tells parables aimed squarely at the religious leaders, and the tension boils over as He pronounces seven woes on the Pharisees. Yet even in judgment His heart breaks, longing to gather Jerusalem as a hen gathers her chicks. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for grief, not glee.
Episode Overview
Today we read Matthew chapters 21 through 23, and the week that will end at the cross begins. Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey, fulfilling Zechariah's prophecy, while crowds spread cloaks and shout Hosanna. Within hours He is in the temple overturning the tables of the money changers, quoting Isaiah—my house will be called a house of prayer—and Jeremiah—but you are making it a den of robbers. Then He curses a fig tree in full leaf but bearing nothing, a living parable about the appearance of fruitfulness without the substance.
The parables that follow are pointed and the leaders know it. Two sons, one who says no and goes, one who says yes and does not. Wicked tenants who beat the servants and then kill the owner's son. A wedding banquet where the invited guests refuse and strangers are brought in from the streets. Each one is about rejection, and each one names the audience.
Chapter 23 is the sharpest sustained criticism Jesus ever delivers—seven woes against hypocrisy. Tithing mint and dill while neglecting justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel. Cleaning the outside of the cup. Whitewashed tombs, beautiful outside and full of bones.
And then, after all of that, the tone breaks. Jerusalem, Jerusalem—how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. The judgment is real. So is the grief.
