Episode Overview
Today we finish Hosea and begin Joel. Hosea's last two chapters hold together the two things this book has refused to separate. Chapter 13 is unsparing about what pride has cost—Israel was fed until satisfied, and then became proud and forgot God. The images are severe, and the consequences are named plainly.
Then chapter 14 opens the door as wide as it goes. Return to the Lord your God; take words with you—Hosea even supplies the words to say. God's answer is one of the loveliest passages in the prophets: I will heal their waywardness and love them freely. Israel will blossom like a lily, send down roots like a cedar, and flourish like a garden. After thirteen chapters of heartbreak, the book's final word to a wandering people is simply an invitation home.
Joel then opens somewhere entirely different. A locust plague has stripped the land bare—what one swarm left, the next devoured. Joel calls the elders, the drunkards, the farmers, and the priests each to look at what has happened and grieve. He is not merely describing an agricultural disaster. He is using the visible ruin of the harvest to point at something less visible: a people's distance from God, and their need to return before greater loss follows.
