Word for Word: The Bible

Prophets for Profit: Judgment on a Corrupt Land and a Mountain Above All | Micah 1–4

Episode Summary

In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we begin Micah, reading chapters 1 through 4. Micah announces God's judgment descending on the land like an unstoppable force, its consequences rippling through specific towns and every level of society. He singles out those who lie awake plotting to seize their neighbors' fields, and prophets who preach for profit while claiming to speak for God—corruption running from the top down. Even here, Micah promises a faithful remnant will be gathered. The vision then lifts toward a day when God's mountain stands above every other. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for hope held in a dark present.

Episode Notes

Episode Overview

Today we begin Micah, a prophet from a small farming town speaking to both Samaria and Jerusalem. Chapter 1 is a lament that names actual places, wordplay running through the town names as Micah walks the invasion route town by town. The judgment is not abstract. It has an address.

Chapter 2 gets specific about what went wrong. People lie awake at night planning how to take fields and houses, and in the morning they do it, because they have the power to. The offense is not impulsive greed but premeditated greed—seizure planned in the dark and executed in daylight. Chapter 3 turns to the leadership: rulers who hate good and love evil, and prophets who cry peace when they are fed but declare war against whoever does not fill their mouths. Prophecy had become a service industry.

Then chapter 4 opens onto something else entirely. In the last days the mountain of the Lord will be established above the hills, and nations will stream to it, not driven but drawn, seeking instruction. Weapons get reshaped into farming tools. Everyone sits under their own vine and fig tree with no one to make them afraid. It is a hope meant to be held precisely when the present looks nothing like it.
