What do you do when the season you are in is not the one you wanted? Today we read Jeremiah chapters 29 through 31. Jeremiah writes a letter to the exiles in Babylon, and his counsel is not what they hoped for: do not resist, do not despair, settle in. Build houses, plant gardens, raise families, and seek the peace of the city where God has placed you. Seventy years will pass before the return, but God promises He can be found by those who seek Him with their whole heart.
The reading then turns forward to promised restoration. God will gather His scattered people, heal old wounds, and make a new covenant—not written on stone this time but on the heart, so that everyone from the least to the greatest will know Him directly and their sin will be remembered no more. Jeremiah's picture of Rachel weeping for her children and then comforted captures the whole balance: exile is real loss, and God's restoration is just as real.
