How do you tell a true prophet from a popular one? Today we read Jeremiah chapters 26 through 28. Jeremiah stands trial after warning that Jerusalem's temple will fall like Shiloh unless the people repent. Priests and prophets demand his death, some officials defend him by recalling Micah's earlier warning, and Jeremiah refuses to soften his message even while his life hangs in the balance. Faithfulness guarantees him no safety here, only a clear conscience.
The reading then turns to a dramatic public clash. Jeremiah has been walking around wearing a wooden yoke, a living sign that submission to Babylon is God's word for this moment. The prophet Hananiah breaks the yoke from his neck and promises freedom within two years. Jeremiah's response teaches how to test prophecy: comforting words are not necessarily true ones, and time will show which is which. Hananiah dies within the year, exactly as Jeremiah said.
