Today we finish Lamentations, reading chapters 3 through 5. Chapter 3 narrows from a ruined city to a single voice—one man describing what the disaster has done to him, in unsparing detail. And then, at the structural center of the whole book, something turns. He remembers that God's mercies are new every morning, that His faithfulness is great. Notice what this hope is not: it is not relief, and it is not an explanation. The suffering has not lifted. What has not changed is God.
The final chapters pull back out to the community—starvation, stripped dignity, a people who have lost everything—and end in prayer, asking God to remember and restore. But the book does not close with a promise. It closes with an open, unresolved question. That refusal to resolve is itself the gift: Lamentations gives permission to grieve honestly while still turning, again and again, back toward God.
