In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Luke chapters 6 through 8. The reading opens with Jesus choosing His twelve apostles, then teaching a kingdom marked by reversal—blessing the poor, the hungry, and the reviled, and calling His followers to love their enemies, withhold judgment, and give generously rather than count the cost. That teaching is lived out in what follows: He heals a Roman centurion's servant, raises a widow's only son, teaches in parables, calms a storm, and raises a dying girl. Join Kevin Mooneyhan as family gets redefined.
Episode Overview
Today we read Luke chapters 6 through 8. Jesus spends a night in prayer before choosing the twelve, then comes down to a level place and teaches. Luke's version pairs blessings with woes in a way Matthew's does not: blessed are you who are poor, hungry, weeping, hated—but woe to you who are rich, well fed, laughing, spoken well of. The reversal is stated in both directions.
Then the hardest teaching: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you. Turn the other cheek. Lend without expecting return. And the reasoning is not that it works, but that it resembles God, who is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Give, and it will be given to you, pressed down, shaken together, running over.
Chapter 7 shows it in practice. A Roman centurion sends word that Jesus need not come—just say the word—and Jesus marvels at his faith. Then at Nain, a funeral procession for a widow's only son, and Luke says Jesus' heart went out to her. Nobody asked Him. He simply sees a woman who has lost her last means of support and gives her son back.
Chapter 8 mentions the women who traveled with Jesus and funded the ministry, gives the parable of the soils, the storm stilled, the demonized man restored, the bleeding woman healed, and Jairus' daughter raised. And when told His mother and brothers are outside, Jesus redefines family: my mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into practice.
