Today we read Hosea chapters 6 through 9, and they open with what sounds like exactly the right response. Come, let us return to the Lord; He has torn us and He will heal us. It is a good song. The problem is what God says next: your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears. The words were sincere at the moment they were spoken and gone by midday. That gap between feeling repentant and actually turning is the subject of these chapters.
What God says He wants instead is mercy and not sacrifice, acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings. The rituals were still being performed faithfully. That was never the issue.
The charges sharpen from there. Covenants made and broken, sins boasted about rather than confessed, alliances sought with foreign powers while God is not consulted. Israel is described as a half-baked cake, as a dove easily deceived, as a people whose strength is draining away without their noticing. The judgment coming is exile, which will strip away the festivals and the familiar rhythms of worship. Hosea grieves this openly—he mourns the loss of the sacred patterns that once tied his people to God, showing that judgment, however necessary, still carries real and painful cost.
