In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Mark chapters 12 through 14. Jesus faces challenges from the religious leaders, answering with a parable about wicked tenants who kill the owner's son, and teaching on taxes, resurrection, and the greatest commandment—to love God with everything and your neighbor as yourself. He warns of the temple's coming destruction and calls His followers to stay watchful. At the Last Supper He reinterprets the bread and wine, then is betrayed with a kiss, arrested, and condemned, while Peter denies Him three times. Join Kevin Mooneyhan as the night closes in.
Episode Overview
Today we read Mark chapters 12 through 14. Jesus tells the parable of the tenants who beat the servants and finally kill the owner's beloved son, and the leaders understand immediately that He has spoken it against them. Then the questions come as traps. Should we pay taxes to Caesar? Whose wife will she be in the resurrection? But one scribe asks an honest question—which commandment is the most important—and gets a direct answer: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus tells him he is not far from the kingdom.
Then a detail easy to miss: Jesus sits down opposite the temple treasury and watches people give. A poor widow puts in two small coins, and He says she put in more than all the others, because they gave out of surplus and she gave everything she had.
Chapter 13 warns about the temple's destruction and the end, with the same refrain as Matthew's version: watch, because no one knows the hour.
Chapter 14 turns dark. A woman anoints Jesus with pure nard worth a year's wages and is criticized; Jesus says she has done a beautiful thing. Judas goes to the chief priests. At the Passover meal the bread and cup are given new meaning. In Gethsemane Jesus falls to the ground and asks that the hour might pass, then says yet not what I will, but what you will. Judas arrives and greets Him with a kiss. And in the courtyard, Peter swears he does not know the man.
