In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Luke chapters 12 through 15. Jesus teaches His followers not to fear those who threaten the body, but to trust the God who cares for sparrows and numbers every hair on their heads. He calls for open acknowledgment of Him, faithful readiness for His return, and genuine repentance, warning that the kingdom's door is narrow and will not stay open forever. The reading closes with three parables of lostness—a sheep, a coin, and a wayward son—all pointing to God's relentless pursuit. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for heaven's celebration.
Episode Overview
Today we read Luke chapters 12 through 15. Jesus warns about the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy, and says everything concealed will be disclosed. Then the reassurance: you are worth more than many sparrows, and even the hairs of your head are numbered. Then the rich fool, who tears down his barns to build bigger ones and dies that night, and the instruction not to worry about food or clothing—consider the ravens, consider the lilies. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Chapters 13 and 14 sharpen the urgency. A fig tree given one more year. A crippled woman healed on the Sabbath while the synagogue leader objects. A narrow door that will not stay open. A banquet where the invited guests all make excuses and the host sends servants into the streets to bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, the lame. And then the cost of discipleship, stated without softening—count the cost before you build the tower.
Chapter 15 is one of the great chapters in Scripture, and it exists because the Pharisees complained that Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them. So He tells three stories. A shepherd leaves ninety-nine to find one. A woman lights a lamp and sweeps the house for one coin. And a father watches a road. When the younger son comes back rehearsing his apology, the father sees him while he is still a long way off, runs to him—an undignified thing for an older man—and interrupts the speech with a robe and a ring. Then the older brother refuses to come in, and the father goes out to plead with him too. Both sons are outside. The father goes after both.
