Today we read Amos chapters 2 through 5, and Amos stops speaking in generalities. He names what is happening: people sold for silver and for a pair of sandals, the poor trampled, the needy pushed aside at the gate where justice was supposed to be done. He calls the wealthy women of Samaria cows of Bashan, who oppress the poor and tell their husbands to bring another drink. Merchants wait impatiently for the Sabbath to end so they can get back to skimping the measure, boosting the price, and cheating with dishonest scales.
What makes it sting is that the religion was going fine. The festivals were kept, the offerings brought, the songs sung. And God's response to all of it is one of the most uncomfortable passages in Scripture: I hate, I despise your religious festivals. Take away the noise of your songs. Worship offered by a society that has abandoned justice is not neutral in God's sight—it is offensive.
Amos uses picture after picture to show the coming judgment is not arbitrary: a bird caught in a snare, a trumpet sounding alarm, a lion roaring. And then the line the whole book is remembered for—let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream. Not a trickle produced on request. A current that keeps running.
