Episode Overview
Today we read Ezekiel chapters 14 through 17, four chapters built around images. It begins with elders sitting down in front of Ezekiel to inquire of God while idols are still set up in their hearts. God's response cuts to the posture behind the question: you cannot hold onto false gods and expect a true word. What we are unwilling to release shapes what we are able to hear.
Then the pictures come. Israel is a grapevine—and unlike other trees, a vine that bears no fruit is good for nothing at all, not even a peg to hang a pot on. Chapter 16 is the most intimate and painful of the four: Jerusalem as a newborn abandoned in a field, rescued by God, cared for, adorned, and grown to beauty, who then uses every gift to chase after other lovers. It reads less like a legal charge than like heartbreak. Chapter 17's riddle of two eagles and a vine addresses the politics of the moment—yet even there God promises to plant a tender shoot on a high mountain, where it will flourish.
