Episode Overview
Today we finish Joel and begin Amos. Joel 2 sounds an alarm—a day of the Lord approaching, dark and dreadful. Then the passage pivots on a single word. Even now, God says, return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning. Rend your heart and not your garments. The tearing of clothes was the visible sign of grief; Joel asks for the thing the sign was supposed to represent.
What follows is a promise of reversal so specific it is almost startling: I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten. Not merely an end to the disaster, but restoration of what the disaster consumed. And then the promise widens past Israel entirely—I will pour out my Spirit on all people, sons and daughters, old and young, servants both male and female. Peter quotes this passage on the day of Pentecost.
Amos then enters, and he is not a professional prophet but a shepherd and tender of sycamore-fig trees. He opens by pronouncing judgment on Israel's neighbors one by one—Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon—each for atrocities committed against other peoples. God's justice is not limited to His covenant people, and His concern for the oppressed reaches far beyond any single group.
