Today we read Hosea chapters 10 through 12. Israel is described as a spreading vine that brought forth fruit for itself—prosperous, and the prosperity went straight into more altars and better sacred stones. The more it flourished, the more it invested in exactly what was destroying it. Hosea's counsel is agricultural and urgent: break up your unplowed ground, sow righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, for it is time to seek the Lord.
Then chapter 11 changes register entirely. God speaks as a parent remembering a small child—when Israel was a child I loved him, I taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms, leading them with cords of human kindness, bending down to feed them. And then the extraordinary turn: how can I give you up? My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused. This is not a God weighing a decision at a distance. It reads like someone talking themselves out of something they have every right to do.
Chapter 12 reaches back to Jacob, who struggled with God and prevailed, and wept and begged for favor. That ancestor's struggle becomes the frame for Israel's own—not a condemnation but an invitation. Return, maintain love and justice, and wait for God always.
