Episode Overview
Today we read Ezekiel chapters 34 through 36, some of the most comforting chapters in the prophets. Chapter 34 opens with a charge against Israel's leaders under the image of shepherds: they ate the curds, wore the wool, and slaughtered the choice animals, but they did not strengthen the weak, heal the sick, bind up the injured, or go looking for the lost. The flock scattered because no one went after it.
God's reply is personal and repeated—I myself will search for my sheep. I myself will tend them. I will bring back the strays and bind up the injured. Where human leadership has failed, God does not appoint a committee; He comes Himself. It is one of Scripture's clearest pictures of God's individual concern for individual people.
Chapter 35 addresses Edom, which cheered as Israel fell, and chapter 36 turns to the mountains of Israel with a promise of fruitfulness after long ruin. But the deepest promise is not about land at all. God will sprinkle clean water, remove the heart of stone, and give a heart of flesh, putting His Spirit within them so they can actually walk in His ways. Restoration means more than rebuilt places. It means changed people.
