Jesus then rides into Jerusalem to the crowd's praise, weeps over the city's coming judgment, and clears a temple that had lost its purpose. He answers every trap the religious leaders set and warns His followers to stay alert through the troubles ahead. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for a week that begins with tears over a city.
Episode Overview
Today we read Luke chapters 19 through 21, as Jesus arrives in Jerusalem for the final week. It starts in Jericho with Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector too short to see over the crowd, who climbs a sycamore-fig tree just to get a look. Jesus stops, calls him by name, and tells him to hurry down because He must stay at his house today. Nobody demands anything from Zacchaeus, yet he promises half his possessions to the poor and fourfold repayment to anyone he cheated. Jesus explains the whole scene in one line: the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.
Then comes the parable of a nobleman who gives ten servants a mina each before leaving to receive a kingdom. Those who put it to work are trusted with cities. The one who buried his out of fear loses even that. Faithfulness with what we have been given is the point.
Jesus rides a colt down the Mount of Olives while His disciples praise God. When Pharisees tell Him to quiet them, He answers that the stones themselves would cry out. Yet as the city comes into view, He weeps, because Jerusalem did not recognize the time of God's coming to her. He drives the sellers from the temple, calling it a house of prayer turned into a den of robbers.
Chapter 20 is a string of traps. The leaders question His authority, and He asks them about John's baptism. They ask about taxes, and He points to Caesar's image on a coin. The Sadducees mock the resurrection, and He shows they know neither Scripture nor God. In chapter 21 a poor widow gives two small coins, more than all the wealthy combined. Jesus then foretells the temple's destruction, wars, persecution, and armies surrounding Jerusalem, and tells His followers to stand firm, stay watchful, and trust His words, which will never pass away.
