Word for Word: The Bible

Humble and Riding a Donkey: A Pierced One and the Shepherd of His People | Zechariah 9–12

Episode Summary

In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Zechariah chapters 9 through 12. The reading looks ahead to the coming Messiah through striking prophecies. Zechariah announces judgment on the nations but restoration for Israel, including the famous picture of a king entering Jerusalem righteous and victorious, yet humble and riding on a donkey—words the New Testament later applies directly to Jesus. Later chapters speak of God pouring out a spirit of grace, leading His people to mourn and be comforted, and even describe looking on one they have pierced. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for a glimpse of the suffering Messiah.

Episode Notes

Episode Overview

Today we read Zechariah chapters 9 through 12, where the book turns from visions to prophecy about what is coming. Chapter 9 contains the image the Gospel writers reach for on Palm Sunday: rejoice greatly, shout, see your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt the foal of a donkey. Every word of that is deliberate. Victorious kings rode war horses. This one arrives on the animal you would use to carry grain.

Running underneath these chapters is the shepherd image, and it is handled with unusual bitterness. God is shepherd to His people, but chapter 11 describes worthless shepherds who do not care for the flock, and a shepherd whose wages are weighed out at thirty pieces of silver—thrown to the potter in the house of the Lord. Matthew quotes it about Judas.

Chapter 12 promises that Jerusalem will be made an immovable rock for all nations, and then turns inward and tender. God will pour out on the house of David a spirit of grace and supplication, and they will look on me, the one they have pierced, and mourn for him as one mourns for an only child. John quotes that line at the crucifixion. The restoration Zechariah describes does not arrive through military strength or political maneuvering. It comes through God's own intervention, and through grief that turns into grace.
