Who speaks for God, and how would you know? Today we read Jeremiah chapters 23 through 25. Jeremiah condemns Israel's shepherds—the leaders and prophets who scatter the flock and speak comfortable lies in God's name, healing the people's wounds only superficially. Against them stands the promise of a righteous Branch from David's line, a shepherd who will actually do what these have failed to do. True prophetic faithfulness means bearing witness to hard truth regardless of what it costs.
The reading then offers a surprising image of hope. Two baskets of figs sit before the temple: those already carried into exile are the good figs, destined for restoration, while the judgment falling on those who remain is far worse.
