Luke traces His genealogy all the way to Adam, showing His significance for all humanity. Jesus is tempted in the wilderness, then stands in His hometown synagogue and declares Isaiah's prophecy of good news for the poor fulfilled in Him—a claim so offensive His neighbors try to throw Him off a cliff. Episode Notes

Episode Overview

Today we read Luke chapters 3 through 5. John's preaching is notable for how practical it gets. The crowds ask what they should do and he says share your extra shirt and your food. Tax collectors ask and he says do not collect more than required. Soldiers ask and he says do not extort, and be content with your pay. Repentance, in John's mouth, is specific to your job.

Luke's genealogy runs backward and does not stop at Abraham like Matthew's. It goes to Adam, son of God—Luke writing for a wider audience, making the point that this concerns everyone.

Then Nazareth. Jesus reads from Isaiah in His hometown synagogue—good news to the poor, freedom for prisoners, sight for the blind, the year of the Lord's favor—rolls up the scroll, sits down, and says today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. It goes well for about a minute. Then He points out that Elijah was sent to a widow in Sidon and Elisha healed a Syrian rather than Israelites, and the congregation drives Him out of town to throw Him off a cliff. The offense was not the claim about Himself. It was the suggestion that God's favor extends past them.

Chapter 5 gives Luke's version of the calling: a night of catching nothing, a net let down on Jesus' word, and a catch so large the boats begin to sink. Peter's response is to ask Jesus to leave—go away from me, Lord, I am a sinful man. They pull the boats ashore, leave everything, and follow.
