Word for Word: The Bible

From Little Bethlehem: Act Justly, Love Mercy, and Walk Humbly | Micah 5–7

Episode Summary

In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Micah chapters 5 through 7, bringing us to the end of Micah. Micah delivers one of the Old Testament's most striking promises—a ruler will come from Bethlehem, small among the clans of Judah, one whose origins reach back to ancient days, who will shepherd his people in peace. Then comes the famous summary of true religion: God requires that His people act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him, cutting through every debate about ritual. Micah closes acknowledging the decay around him, yet ends in hope. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for what God actually requires.

Episode Notes

Episode Overview

Today we finish Micah. Chapter 5 contains the promise the wise men would later quote to Herod: out of Bethlehem, small among the clans of Judah, will come one who is to be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old. The detail that matters is the smallness. God keeps choosing the overlooked place, the younger brother, the town nobody would pick.

Chapter 6 stages a courtroom scene. God calls the mountains as witnesses and asks His people to testify against Him—what have I done to you? How have I burdened you? Then comes the question everyone asks when they feel the weight of guilt: what should I bring? Burnt offerings? Thousands of rams? Rivers of oil? My firstborn? The escalation is desperate, and the answer cuts underneath all of it. He has shown you what is good. Act justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly with your God. Three things, none of them purchasable.

Chapter 7 is honest about how far the society has fallen—the faithful have vanished, neighbors cannot be trusted, family members turn on each other. And Micah's response is not denial but a decision: as for me, I watch in hope. The book ends marveling that God delights to show mercy and hurls our sins into the depths of the sea.
