In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Matthew chapters 8 through 10. The miracles pile up quickly—healing a leper, a centurion's servant, and Peter's mother-in-law, and calming a storm with a word. These are signs that God's kingdom has arrived, each one inviting faith. Alongside them Jesus teaches on the cost of discipleship and shows radical compassion by eating with tax collectors and sinners, making clear His kingdom welcomes the outcast. Chapter 10 sends the twelve out with authority and almost no provisions, warned that opposition is coming. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for a kingdom that arrives in power.
Episode Overview
Today we read Matthew chapters 8 through 10, and the miracles come in rapid succession. Jesus touches a leper—a detail worth pausing on, since touching made Him ceremonially unclean and He does it anyway. He heals a Roman centurion's servant at a distance and says He has not found faith like this in all Israel, which would have landed hard on His Jewish listeners. He calms a storm with a word, and the disciples ask what kind of man this is that even the winds and the waves obey Him.
Between the miracles, the demands sharpen. A scribe volunteers to follow, and Jesus warns that foxes have holes and birds have nests but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head. Another asks to bury his father first. The cost is stated plainly rather than minimized.
Then Matthew the tax collector gets called out of his booth, and Jesus eats dinner at his house with a roomful of people the religious leaders would not sit near. Their objection gets the reply that defines the whole ministry: it is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.
Chapter 10 commissions the twelve. Take no gold, no bag, no extra shirt—dependence is the curriculum. And the warning is unsparing: you will be handed over, flogged, hated. But do not be afraid. Even the sparrows are accounted for, and you are worth more than many sparrows.
