Come to Me, All Who Are Weary: A Prophet's Doubt and Seeds in Four Soils | Matthew 11–13

Episode Summary

In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Matthew chapters 11 through 13. The reading opens with John the Baptist's doubt from prison—even he questions whether Jesus is truly the one. Jesus answers by pointing to His works, then pronounces judgment on cities that rejected Him while still inviting the weary to come to Him for rest. Conflict with the Pharisees follows over the Sabbath, as Jesus prioritizes human need over rigid rules. He then teaches through parables about a kingdom that grows quietly and often unnoticed. Episode Notes

Episode Overview

Today we read Matthew chapters 11 through 13, and it opens somewhere unexpected: John the Baptist, in prison, sends messengers to ask whether Jesus is really the one, or whether they should expect someone else. This is the man who baptized Him and saw the heavens open. Doubt shows up in the most credentialed places. Jesus does not rebuke him—He sends back a report of what is happening: the blind see, the lame walk, the good news is preached to the poor.

Then, in the same stretch where Jesus denounces towns that watched miracles and did not repent, comes the invitation: come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, for I am gentle and humble in heart. A yoke is still work. But the burden is light because of who is carrying the other side.

Chapter 12 brings the Sabbath conflicts—grain picked on the Sabbath, a shriveled hand healed on the Sabbath—and Jesus insists mercy outranks ritual. The Pharisees begin plotting.

Chapter 13 shifts to parables. A sower scatters seed on a path, rocky ground, thorns, and good soil. Weeds grow among wheat and are left until harvest rather than ripped out early. A mustard seed, the smallest of seeds, becomes a tree. Yeast works invisibly through dough. Together they describe a kingdom that advances quietly, tolerates ambiguity, and ends up larger than anyone expected.
