Episode Overview
Today we read Ezekiel chapters 37 through 39, beginning with one of the most famous scenes in all of Scripture. Ezekiel is set down in the middle of a valley filled with bones—not recently fallen, but very dry, long past any hope. God asks him a question that is really a test of imagination: son of man, can these bones live? Ezekiel's answer is honest and careful. Sovereign Lord, you alone know.
Then he is told to prophesy to the bones, and as he speaks there is a noise, a rattling, and the bones come together, tendon by tendon, until a vast army stands on its feet. The interpretation is given plainly: these bones are the whole house of Israel, saying our hope is gone, we are cut off. The vision is not primarily about the general resurrection—it is about a people who believe their national life is finished, and a God who breathes on ruin.
Two sticks are then joined into one, promising the reunion of a kingdom divided for centuries, under one shepherd from David's line. Chapters 38 and 39 look further out, to Gog of Magog and a coalition rising against God's restored people—and to their decisive overthrow, so that the nations watching will know who God is. Whatever still lies ahead, God's purposes are not finally stoppable.
