Would you invest in a place that is about to be destroyed? Today we read Jeremiah chapters 32 through 35. Jerusalem is under siege and Jeremiah is confined in the courtyard of the guard when God gives him a strange assignment: buy a field from his cousin, sign the deed, and store it in a clay jar so it will last a long time. It is a prophetic act betting on a future he cannot yet see. Even as the city falls, God promises that houses and fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.
The chapters that follow expand that promise—cities rebuilt, a righteous ruler from David's line, a renewed priesthood, a covenant as sure as day and night. Yet human faithfulness keeps faltering. King Zedekiah leads the people to free their slaves by covenant, then lets them take them back. By contrast, the Rechabites, who have simply kept their family's old commands for generations, stand as a quiet picture of the obedience God notices amid widespread unfaithfulness.
