Episode Overview
Today we read Hosea chapters 3 through 5. Chapter 3 is short and staggering. Hosea is told to go again and love a woman who has been unfaithful, and he buys her back for fifteen shekels of silver and a measure of barley—the price you would pay for something of little value. Then he tells her they will live together many days without the old life, a picture of Israel's coming season without king, sacrifice, or the familiar props of national religion. The stripping is deliberate, meant to break an attachment rather than merely punish it.
Chapters 4 and 5 lay out the charges. There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land. The priests, who should have taught, have instead fed on the people's sin. God says His people are destroyed for lack of knowledge—not lack of information, but lack of the kind of knowing that comes from relationship. Idols made of wood are consulted for guidance.
And yet the indictment keeps circling back to an open door. The God who tears is the same God who heals; the one who wounds also binds up. Judgment is real here, but it is never presented as God's final desire for His people.
