Word for Word: The Bible

Angry at Mercy: A City That Repents and a Prophet Who Cannot Celebrate | Jonah 2–4

Episode Summary

In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Jonah chapters 2 through 4, bringing us to the end of Jonah. Swallowed by a great fish and facing what feels like certain death, Jonah finally turns to God in prayer, moving from desperate lament to grateful trust. Delivered, he goes to Nineveh and preaches—and to his own surprise, the entire city repents, from the king down to the animals, on a single warning. Rather than rejoicing, Jonah is furious that God shows mercy to people he considers enemies. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for a book that ends on a question.

Episode Notes

Episode Overview

Today we finish Jonah. Chapter 2 is a prayer offered from inside a fish, and it reads like a psalm—seaweed wrapped around his head, the deep closing over him, and then the turn: salvation comes from the Lord. Notice that Jonah's circumstances have not improved at all when he says it. He is still in the fish.

Chapter 3 delivers the most successful sermon in Scripture, and it is eight words long. Jonah walks into Nineveh announcing destruction in forty days, and the entire city believes God—the king comes down off his throne, sits in ashes, and orders fasting so thorough it includes the livestock. God relents.

Chapter 4 is where the book actually lands. Jonah is not glad. He is angry enough to want to die, and he tells God exactly why: I knew you were gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love—that is why I ran. God grows a plant to shade him, then kills it, and asks a question about proportion: you cared about a vine you did not plant, should I not care about a city of a hundred and twenty thousand people? The book ends there. No answer from Jonah.
