Episode Overview
Today we open the book of Ezekiel with chapters 1 through 4. Ezekiel is a priest in exile by the Kebar River, and his book begins not with an argument but with a vision that nearly overwhelms description—a storm wind, creatures with four faces, wheels full of eyes, and high above them a throne with the appearance of a man surrounded by fire and radiance. Ezekiel falls face down. Everything he later says to the exiles rests on this: he has seen the glory of God.
Then comes the commission. He is sent to a stubborn, hard-hearted people, and God tells him plainly they may not listen—his job is to speak regardless. He is handed a scroll covered with words of lament and woe and told to eat it, and it tastes sweet as honey. God's word can be sweet even when its message is hard. Ezekiel then begins acting his message out physically, building a model siege and lying on his side for months, embodying the sin of Israel and Judah in ways no one could ignore.
