In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we begin the New Testament with Matthew chapters 1 through 3. Matthew opens by establishing who Jesus is. His genealogy ties Him to Israel's history, and His birth draws worship from distant magi even as King Herod tries to destroy Him—introducing the conflict between Jesus as true king and the earthly powers threatened by Him. John the Baptist then appears, preparing the way and calling people to repent because the kingdom of heaven has come near. When John baptizes Jesus, the heavens open. Join Kevin Mooneyhan as the Gospels begin.
Episode Overview
Today we open the New Testament. Matthew begins with a genealogy, which modern readers tend to skim, and that is a loss—because of who is in it. Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and the wife of Uriah all appear, four women whose stories involve scandal, foreignness, or both. Matthew is signaling from the first paragraph what kind of king this is and who His family includes.
The birth account moves fast and stays tense. Magi arrive from the east asking where the king of the Jews has been born, and Herod is disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. The magi worship; Herod plans murder. The family flees to Egypt and returns only after Herod dies. Before Jesus can speak a word, the pattern of His life is set—worshiped by outsiders, hunted by insiders.
John the Baptist arrives in camel's hair and a leather belt, preaching repentance because the kingdom of heaven has come near. When Jesus comes to be baptized, John objects—rightly, since Jesus has nothing to repent of. Jesus insists, and as He comes up out of the water the heavens open, the Spirit descends like a dove, and a voice says this is my Son, whom I love. Then the Spirit leads Him into the wilderness for forty days of testing, echoing Israel's forty years. Where Israel failed repeatedly, Jesus answers every temptation with Scripture.
