Episode Notes

Episode Overview

What does obedience cost when nobody wants to hear it? Today we read Jeremiah chapters 19 through 22. Jeremiah takes a clay jar to the valley outside the city and smashes it before the elders, a sign that once Jerusalem's judgment falls it cannot be mended. The act costs him immediately: the priest Pashhur has him beaten and locked in the stocks overnight. Jeremiah pours out his frustration to God, yet he does not soften the message.

The reading then moves into the royal house. When King Zedekiah begs for a word of hope as Babylon besieges the city, Jeremiah's answer is unflinching—God Himself is fighting against Jerusalem, and surrender is the only path to survival. From there the word turns to kings who built their palaces through injustice and unpaid labor, measured against a father who did what was right. Even here the reading points ahead to a righteous ruler who will do what these failed kings could not.
