Word for Word: The Bible

A House of Prayer for All Nations: Arguing About Greatness on the Way | Mark 9–11

Episode Summary

In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Mark chapters 9 through 11. After the Transfiguration, Jesus heals a demon-possessed boy His disciples could not free, tracing their failure to a lack of prayer. He again tells them He must suffer and die, but instead of understanding, they argue over who is greatest. Jesus responds by welcoming a child as the picture of true greatness. As He journeys toward Jerusalem He teaches on divorce and wealth, watching a rich young man walk away. He enters the city on a donkey, then clears the temple. Episode Notes

Episode Overview

Today we read Mark chapters 9 through 11. The Transfiguration comes first—dazzling white, Moses and Elijah, a voice from the cloud saying this is my Son, whom I love, listen to him. Then down into a mess: a father whose son the disciples could not help, and one of Scripture's most honest prayers—I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.

Jesus tells them plainly again that He will be killed and rise after three days. Mark notes they did not understand and were afraid to ask. And then, walking along the road, they argue about which of them is the greatest. Jesus asks what they were discussing and they go silent, because they know. He sits down, takes a child, and says anyone who wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.

Chapter 10 covers divorce, then children again, then the rich man who runs up and kneels and asks what he must do. Mark alone records that Jesus looked at him and loved him—and then told him the one thing he could not do. He leaves sad, because he had great wealth. James and John promptly ask for the best seats in glory, and Jesus says the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. Blind Bartimaeus, by contrast, asks only to see.

Chapter 11 brings the entry on a donkey, the fig tree, and the temple cleared—my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations, and the area being used for commerce was the one court where Gentiles were allowed to pray.
