In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we finish Zechariah and begin Malachi. Zechariah closes with a vision of the end times—a coming day of crisis that ultimately leads to salvation, when a fountain will be opened to cleanse David's house from sin and God Himself will reign as king over all the earth. Malachi then opens on a very different note, confronting a people grown cold toward God's love. The priests offer blind, lame, and diseased animals on the altar, gifts they would never dare present to their governor. Join Kevin Mooneyhan as the Old Testament nears its close.
Episode Overview
Today we finish Zechariah and open Malachi. Zechariah 13 begins with a fountain opened to the house of David to cleanse them from sin and impurity, and moves through a hard passage about the shepherd struck and the sheep scattered—a line Jesus applies to Himself on the night of His arrest. Chapter 14 goes apocalyptic: nations gathered against Jerusalem, the Mount of Olives split in two, a day known only to the Lord that is neither day nor night, living water flowing out in summer and winter alike. And then the resolution: the Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and His name the only name.
Malachi arrives about a century after the temple is rebuilt, and the problem is not idolatry or collapse. It is coldness. God opens with I have loved you, and the people answer, how have you loved us? That exchange sets the pattern for the whole book—God makes a statement, the people dispute it.
Then the specifics. The priests are bringing blind, lame, and diseased animals to the altar. And God's challenge is devastatingly practical: try offering that to your governor. Would he accept you? Would he be pleased with you? Nobody would insult a human official this way, but God gets the animals nobody wants. How we handle what is sacred shows what we actually believe about it.
