In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we read Amos chapters 6 through 8. Amos confronts those who are at ease and comfortable, indulging in luxury while remaining indifferent to the decay around them—proof that material comfort and spiritual health do not always travel together, and can move in opposite directions. Through a series of visions—locusts, fire, and finally a plumb line—God reveals both His patience and His limits. Most striking is the warning of a coming famine, not of food or water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for what happens after every call is ignored.
Episode Overview
Today we read Amos chapters 6 through 8. Chapter 6 opens with a phrase worth sitting with: woe to you who are at ease in Zion. What follows is not a list of crimes but a description of a lifestyle—lying on beds inlaid with ivory, dining on choice lambs, strumming instruments, drinking wine by the bowlful, using the finest lotions. The indictment is the last line: but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph. The problem is not the comfort itself. It is comfort that has made them unable to notice what is falling apart around them.
Then come the visions, and they show something remarkable about God's patience. Amos sees a swarm of locusts, and he pleads, and God relents. He sees a devouring fire, and he pleads again, and God relents again. Then he sees the Lord standing by a wall with a plumb line, and this time Amos says nothing. There is nothing to argue with. A plumb line does not debate; it simply shows whether a wall is straight.
The last warning may be the heaviest in the book. The days are coming, God says, when I will send a famine through the land—not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord. People will stagger from sea to sea searching for a word and not find it. It is a picture of what happens when every previous call to return has been ignored.
