Word for Word: The Bible

A City Without Walls: Greater Glory Ahead and God Himself as Its Defense | Haggai 2; Zechariah 1–2

Episode Summary

In today's episode of Word for Word: The Bible, we finish Haggai and begin Zechariah. Haggai promises the rebuilt temple's future glory will exceed the old—not through grandeur, but because God's presence fills it. Zechariah then calls the people to repent, recalling how their ancestors ignored God's warnings, before turning to comfort: God is fiercely devoted to Jerusalem and will restore her. One vision pictures Jerusalem as a city without walls, protected not by fortifications but by God Himself as a wall of fire around it. Join Kevin Mooneyhan for security that does not depend on defenses.

Episode Notes

Episode Overview

Today we finish Haggai and begin Zechariah. Haggai 2 addresses a discouragement specific to the older generation: some of them remembered Solomon's temple, and this one looked like nothing by comparison. Haggai does not argue the point. He redirects it. Be strong, work, for I am with you. The glory of this house will be greater than the former—not because the building will be finer, but because of who fills it.

Zechariah opens with a call backward before a call forward. Do not be like your ancestors, who would not listen. And then a question that lands hard: your ancestors, where are they now? And the prophets, do they live forever? The warnings outlived both the people who ignored them and the prophets who gave them.

Then the visions begin. Horsemen patrolling the earth report that the whole world is at rest—which sounds like good news until you realize Jerusalem is still in ruins while everyone else is comfortable. God's response is jealousy on Jerusalem's behalf. Then a man goes out with a measuring line to size up the city, and an angel stops him: Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the number of people in it, and God Himself will be a wall of fire around it and the glory within. The measuring was too small a plan.
